Welcome to The Cicada Library!
"A book is a loaded gun"
Some of my earliest memories involve libraries. I remember more about "my" first library than my first house. As a child, the library was such a magical place- I could play on the computers, crawl inside a wooden gazebo that sat in the childrens book section. I distinctly remember the massive stuffed monkey that sat atop a shelf, and the kind face of the librarian shining down at me, on my level in her rolling desk chair, always ready with a tub of prizes. A reward for the very simple act of existing in a place. That sums Them up pretty well, I think. Libraries reward you for existing in a place.
as I got older, I stayed in the Library. it was remarkable how even diffrent libraries had the same feeling. specifically i was particularly fond of the libraries curated by my teachers. they were special, even more than the others. now, for the first time in my life, im considering libraries as more than just magical places that send you home with as many book as you can carry. Theyre A third space.theyre one of the only places you can exist without a need to spend money! a library asks nothing of you, but basic respect. treat the books with care, keep your voice soft and respect the other patrons. libraries are an amazing place, the epitome of scociety. to me, a library is the bright and shinning beacon of humanity- the great unifier! Ive seen old- folks looking at old records, seen a man ask hopefully if they might be able to print him out "a kentucky", which he excitedly exclaimed would be "perfect!" for his project: a wooden state shaped cut out, popular in our area. there are children, their parents. there are computers, wifi- more basic needs-warmth, shelter and light. so much more than books.
If your a tad less sentimental than I, here is a list of things some libraries offer that are a little more practical:
